No, it was not an accident. He jumped off the hot air balloon (knowing there was no way he could have survived it) not because he wanted to die.

Ohhhh, now I see what you meant. Well, I think it's suicide then because he jumped deliberately and he wasn't completely out of his mind. He probably knew he was going to die from the fall, even if he didn't want to. Although, if he thought he could survive the fall onto sand, then it could be called an accident.

Did he throw a whole lot of things and jump from the balloon to reduce the weight of the balloon and prevent it from crashing?

The two guys were ballooning over the desert, when suddenly a gas leak occurred. The balloon slowly started to lose altitude, forcing the two to throw stuff off to reduce weight. They became soon aware that letting their stuff go wasn't enough, so the other guy had to jump to save the other's life at the cost of his own. They used the matches to decide which one had to jump, and this guy, holding the cut match, had to jump.
