Well, I'm bound and determined go get another active topic in this forum, without posting a new thread, so here we go again. Next question.

This has to do with electricity. Why does North America use a 120 volt system, whereas Europe uses a 220 volt system. DO NOT answer because Europe is better than North America :P.

For a bonus point: What is significant about a 120 volt current that makes more dangerous than, say, a 130 volt current?

I would guess that originally 120V was installed, and although 230/240V would be more useful, it would be too hard to implement across all of America.

For the bonus, current is measured in amps, so you'd struggle to find a 120V current ;) I don't see how it could be particularly dangerous, because current is directly proportional to voltage divided by resistance, so a lower voltage would surely yield a lower, and thus less dangerous current :|

All I know is that in movies they always tell to bring a converter when going to Europe on a trip :P

I'd say the 120 volt currect is more dangerous because less voltage can go through the current at one time and if the more voltage was to pass through the currect than is possible at one time, there could be a malfunction. There if you touched the power cord, some of the extra electricity would try to escape the cord and go through you. Therefore making it dangerous.

It's 1am..and I'm tired. That answer is wrong probably :P

Its to do with the amount of power generated from the power stations in each country. North America uses the same transformer combination as Europe but produces a different amount of power. The resulting "safe" voltage in the home is then different. A complete guess.

A higher current gives more resistance. Therefore the higher the current the harder it is for it to jump through the body. Another guess.

i'm feeling pedantic, so:

current is equal to voltage divided by resistance, current is proportional to voltage, where 1/resistance is the constant of proportionality.

I'll give you the point on that Meia, it's close enough. The reason that started it though, was that when America really started developing electricity, 120V was the maximum that could be used on a lightbulb without it exploding. By the time that Europe started seriously developing it, more durable lightbulbs were created, so they adopted 220V.

No one's got the bonus so far though. If no one gets it by tonight, I'll tell you ;).

This isnt a trick question is it? Like theres more homes using 120v in the world than 220. Therefore you are more likely to be shocked by 120v:)

No, there is a real medical reason why 120V is particularly dangerous. It's more dangerous to be shocked by 120V than 130V.

Someone, please get this one! :P

ok heres the deleo

lets say 130v is applied. That would be in the order of say 25ma? am i right? well anyway the current of 120 would be 50ma? ami i right

Both are strong enough to killl but the 120v is more likely to cause fibrilllation(which is rapid heart beats me thinks) and as the resistance drops the 120v will reach the fatal 100ma point well before the 130v. The lower the voltage applied the higher the skin resistance the and the less likely the current is to become fatal....
or am i in completely the wrong track here :?

Well, you got why it's more dangerous, but for the wrong reason. I'm feeling generous today, so I'll give you the bonus point.

The problems with 120V has to do with Alternating Current. AC is exactly what it sounds like, the electrons move back and forth x times per second. X is determined as the Volts divided by 2. Thus, with 120V, the particles move forward 60 times, and backwards 60 times, every second. This frequency, is of course, 60Hz. This frequency is capable of disrupting the heart VERY easily. Thus, why 130V is less dangerous than 120V, 130 won't disrupt the heart nearly as easily, and it's not too much to overload the body.

This isn't to say that 220V is any better than 120V. 220 would most likely kill you outright, or at least put you in the hospital for a good time.

Scores: It's meia's question too.
