I'm curious about how years spent gazing at the monitor affected the eyesight of you computeraholics. And, is it really the monitor that affected your eyesight? If your parents wear glasses too, mention that aswell

Edit: Ah, i see the poll dissolved into thin air soon after posting for some reason. Fixed

I've been staring at computer screens for nearly 9 years now, and my eyes are perfectly fine.

I have glasses, and so does everyone else in my family. We all only have to wear our temporarily or wear contacts. I use mine for black boards, my dad uses them for reading, my mom has contacts, and my sister has contacts.

I've had glasses for a while now but it was before I really got into computer gaming a whole bunch (granted, I was still playing computer games, but it was mostly console games at the time). so I'm fairly sure the comp monitor didn't do it......it's probably not helping though.:D

I've had glasses for about nine years. I get eye problems from both sides of the family. Cross-eye comes from my father's side of the family, and my lazy eye comes from my mother's side (or is it the other way around :?).

I had great problems distinguishing the 3d dimension in real life (think Yoshi's Story for the N64 and you get a rough idea of what I used to see). So, the eye doctor actually perscribed playing video games to help my eyesight. Now I can percieve 3d, but I barely have any depth perception.

That unique cure means that I own all of you :P :D.

I've been staring at monitors for about 7 years, and it took a long ass time for my eyes to get blurry finally. And now I need glasses, I can barely read a pixelated screen now.

Wow, lol. So you're a cross-eyed, lazy-eyed person living in a not depthed world.

Sounds like it was caused by computers then..

I've been using computers for nearly 18 years and I can see perfectly fine. Whether or not you use computers probably doesn't make a difference.

Both of my parents use reading glasses, but that's because they're getting older and the muscles in their eyes tighten. Some kind of surgery to relax your muscles would be much better than getting reading glasses. If you find that you're starting to need reading glasses, try getting really drunk and see if it relaxes your muscles. :) Just because your eyesight is going bad doesn't mean it can't be fixed.

I suppose that's one "good" thing about my degree (aero engineering), there aren't too many terms/words/etc that have "alternative" meanings.
What, like cockpits, turboshafts, thrust, nozzles, corkscrews, ram drag, payload, flaps, and wind tunnels?

After eleven years of using computers(i even remember the old pre-PC computers i used to have, forgot how are they called), my eyes have changed from perfect sight to -1.25(?), which means, i have problems distinguishing a cow from a house if it's over 30 meters away....

I'm fairly sure that it's the monitor that degraded my eyes the most. Either that, or reading, since i'm a book addict in free time

I don't use glasses and I see perfectly well. So do both my parents.

Nor me or my bro use glasses and we see perfectly well.
My mum wears glasses and she sees fine with them, but only long sighted without them.

Seeing blurry is not cause by your retina cells working poorly, it is cause by the shape of your lens.
the lens lets through photons (ie visual light and other) and is therefor not affected by it. Muscles control the shape of the lens as well, but they are hidden behind the sclera (white part of the eye) and iris, which means light does not reach these.

It is therefor rather unusual if looking at a certain object affects the need for glasses.

Afaik, headache is the only symptom that might be caused by looking at a screen too long per day. (yeah, epilepsy with that 50Hz frequency and all, but I think that's even debatable)

I thought everyone knew that...

My parents are in the medical profesion and so are aware of everything unhealthy. As a result I have a bloody great tinted second screen on every computer to block the harmful rays.
Last time I had a check, they said I had 20 20 vison which i think is perfect vision. My mum uses reading glasses and my dad seems to need them but prefers a magniflying glass8O

My 3 brothers need nought, their eyes are fine.

Oh and my eyes are slate blue as well, just an afterthought.
