The quote "Shocking new book, The Oil Age is Over, blows the lid off the most important and devastating information of our time. . ." makes me laugh. It is accredited to nobody, and having googled it with no luck, I think the author said it himself as it would sell more books.
To quote him, "amazing new technology" will help significantly...Aberdeen (where I live) is the oil capital of Europe, and reserves here were supposed to run out before 2020. However, with new drilling techniques, the oil reserves are expected to last at least another 70 years. This is also the case at many sites across the globe, and although it will eventually run out, it won't be as soon as that bloke is claiming.

another problem about wind energy is that it's not profitable...
It costs more money to build and maintain one of those mills than the money they got from the power.
solar power is not never ending, but suffice it to say we'll kill ourselves before that source runs out
deuterium has less material than helium: Deuterium is an atom made of one proton and one neutron.
2D --> 1He

^^the problem with wind power is it also has negative effects on the environment, something to do with drawing the energy out of the atmosphere (wind, strangely) and causing global warming, which is why there are objections to offshore wind farms.
nill bud, think about this.. the bigest cause of global warming is the cars and factorys tthat burn fossile fuels. Wind energy may in fact cause this.. but the reduced number of cars running as we'd be out of fossil fuel, will more then compensate for this.
There is change on the horizon... maybe that site is fake... but it IS coming anyway.
Fosil fuels will replenish after time passes,, But if we learn from our mistakes, and advance our tecknology far enough, we won't ned them when the time comees. Again, I don't think that nuclear fussion is anywhere close to being perfected, but other tecknologies exist, and they should be utiliized.

It also takes quite some energy to manufacture the power cells, although not as much as it takes to make windmills for power
Cost will always be the biggest problem with respect to... well... everything!
Perhaps we should abolish currency

solar power efficiency is around 25-30% for the very best - that's why it's not as widely used, most of the energy is lost in surface heat on the cells.

LOL
25-30% is huge the efficiency the human body has is 35%!
I think combustion engines don't reach that kind of efficiency.
If you want to compare with something I do know... the light bulb has an efficiency of 5%

maybe my figure is off then, but it's true that solar cells are wildly inefficient.
you're using the wrong lightbulbs btw, they invented energy efficient light bulbs for a reason you know...

As it happens, we were covering this topic in Chemistry today, albeit beiefly. As far as vehicles/ engines are concerned, ethanol is the perfect fuel. As you probably know, it is made from fermentating ethene, which is a natural produce in sugar cane. Ethanol burns efficiently to produce Carbon Dioxide and water, so there are few pullutants. More Importantly, the CO 2 and water could technically be re-used to grow more sugarcane, making it renewable The only problem is the water produced clogging up the engine, although with time new engines will be developed to solve this. This fuel can be mixed with about 15% of conventional petrol to give it a higher energy output, and although it still uses petrol, it will seriously reduce the overall petrol usage.
P.S. Global warming hasn't been proven to exist, its just a theory. There could actually be global dulling, so things preventing global warming aren't actually necessary .

I don't actually understand how CO2 is supposed to destroy the ozone layer, actually...
Even if you prove that CO2 destroys ozone, you can't really say how it got up there!
Anyone remember the molar volume of a gas? CO2 has higher density than other gases. How does it go up?

afaik CO2 doesn't destroy the O-Zone layer.
CO2 is a greenhouse gas, which causes global warming - a very much seperate thing.
Greenhouse gases trap the suns energy inside the atmosphere thus warming up the earth.
edit: although your point is how did it get up there. Well I don't know, there's bound to be something on it on the internet - it certainly looks like it goes up to me.

Florine gas is a gas that destroys the ozone layer. (the O3 molecules separate to join with Flourine)
I think either hydrogen fuel would be best. Almost all these other renewable fuels are really expensive and only work if the sun or wind is about.

Actually?
C1, did you not read my whole last post about why ethanol is a viable alternative fuel source? Or did you just forget to add a word to your sentence?

Ethanol isn't a viable source, since you'd need an ungodly amount of crops to power even a small city. Plus, like he said, it still depends upon the sun and the wind (and the other elements). If something goes wrong with the harvest (flood, blight, lots of tornados, etc), then the entire world gets screwed for a year or more. Not that great of an idea when you look at it from the perspective.

CO2 couldn't destroy ozone, because it's too stable to break up an 03 molecule. Adding or subtracting anything from it (short of taking an oxygen away, making it monoxide) is near impossible in a natural setting. So, here you go something taken from another website (if you want it I can give it to you), because odds are everyone is too lazy to click a hyperlink:
Spoiler (Click to Expand)
Ozone is destroyed by reactions with chlorine, bromine, nitrogen, hydrogen, and oxygen gases. Reactions with these gases typically occurs through catalytic processes. A catalytic reaction cycle is a set of chemical reactions which result in the destruction of many ozone molecules while the molecule that started the reaction is reformed to continue the process. Because of catalytic reactions, an individual chlorine atom can on average destroy nearly a thousand ozone molecules before it is converted into a form harmless to ozone.
When ultraviolet light waves (UV) strike CFC* (CFCl3) molecules in the upper atmosphere, a carbon-chlorine bond breaks, producing a chlorine (Cl) atom. The chlorine atom then reacts with an ozone (O3) molecule breaking it apart and so destroying the ozone. This forms an ordinary oxygen molecule(O2) and a chlorine monoxide (ClO) molecule. Then a free oxygen** atom breaks up the chlorine monoxide. The chlorine is free to repeat the process of destroying more ozone molecules. A single CFC molecule can destroy 100,000 ozone molecules.
* CFC - chlorofluorocarbon: it contains chlorine, fluorine and carbon atoms.
** UV radiation breaks oxygen molecules (O2) into single oxygen atoms.
Chemical equation
CFCl3 + UV Light ==> CFCl2 + Cl
Cl + O3 ==> ClO + O2
ClO + O ==> Cl + O2
The free chlorine atom is then free to attack another ozone molecule
Cl + O3 ==> ClO + O2
ClO + O ==> Cl + O2
and again ...
Cl + O3 ==> ClO + O2
ClO + O ==> Cl + O2
and again... for thousands of times.

CO2 Doesn't hurt the ozone layer.. it makes it thicker. This is what causes global warming. Th ethinker the ozone layer gets, more heat is traped in side.
C1, hydrogen is is extreamly dangerous. It is the most explosive gas that exists.. its almost as bad as the fumes from jetfuel.
Glen I think that quoted artical is flawed.. it states that nitrogen is dangerous to the ozone, but Nitrogen is about 73% of all the gasses in the atmosphere.
Sulphuric gasses produced by factorys will eat a hole through the ozone layer however, even if CO2 doesn't.
And whether or not anything is proven.. the hole in the ozone WAS.. Its above antartica... above the ice caps.. good place for it eh?.
This is also a for of global warming.. by eating a giant hole in the ozone layer we now allow DIRECT sunlight tro the surface of the earth. This is far hotter, and intense due to ultra-violet light no longer blocked by the ozone. layer. This direct sunlight will melt the caps, and cause masive flooding allong all costal cities.. posably sinking island like Hawaii, Japan, and Cuba. to name a few.
Solor power as an alternative energy source IS NOT efficiaant.. but it IS an alternative.. I probobly should have said that when I mentioned it above, though I dont think the energy loss is as bad as your statistic.. iit is however somewhat of a hindrence..
Hydro electric power however, is a bit more expensive to set up, and competes fairly well.
The only other option available would be nuclear power. very dangerous, and costly to operate.
There have been many attempts to create aternate forms of power. I had designed a way to power a motorcycle with electricty.. its moter was only a few magnets attached to the wheels. This accually allowed the batery to charge as it was used. The batery charged the electro magnets and forced the wheels to spin as the electro magnets polarity kept switching.
to slow down was the same process, but in reverse. The problem was (and still is) that we can't get the electro magnets polatirty to regulate.. as it begins to spin, it want to continue, and never accually levels off at any desired speed. Traveling 4 miles (in theory) would alow you to reach a top speed of about 400+ miles an hour. That really isnt safe.. and the barings can't handel it. This was a joint effort by myself, and a few pals that had their acts together. We eventually scrapped the project, But it proves that power can be used to rgenorate more power.. We were doing this to try and win the harley davidson USA open compition, where they'll give away a shit load of cash to any one who makes an AMERCAN bike faster then theirs.. this hasn't been done yet.. Our bike was faster,... just unridable.
y the way, I knew what was going on.. but I wasn't in the power /motion end of it.. I was welding the frame. and making minor adjustment here and there... I was only 18 at the time.
