Ahh, i though you went insane, with that title. As opticle mice don't require batteries(not cordless).
Just a small glimpse of that page, and it seems you need that stupid pad thing. Eh?

yep, and i tend to spill coffee alot.. i wonder what that would do to an electical device..
Okay some coffe escapes m desperate attempt to clean up,and rolls down the wire, to that back of my PC, where it drips to my phone line still pluged into my modem. (though i have cable access now) From there the coffee makes contact with the tine electrode conectors between the phone line and modems port, causing an instant ground.
Suddenly the familiar smell of cooking silcone fills the room.(DO NOT ASK WHY THAT FAMILIAR>>ALL YOU NEED TO KNOW IS IT WAS AN EXPENSIVE WHOOPSIE )
end sinario

I stay well clear of cordless devices, too fiddly and batteries are eaten by the tonne. That may not need batteries, but the pad looks annoying.
My corded, optical mouse goes comando.

The mousepad it uses to operate and move the mouse is like a touch pad.
Thin, spilage resistant, and light. All it does is power the mouse, and move the cursor.
I personally love it, better than my old wired trackball anyway

How could a mouse be cordless, optical, and without a battery if its cordless? What would power the mouse? You would have to have some sort of power supply wouldn't you not?

Solar Power!
Perhaps there is an embedded rechargeable battery in the mouse and is recharged by a station which is also the FM signal receiver
EDIT: I see how it works. The Mouse Mat and the mouse itself completes a connection which allows the power to go to the mouse
hence the whole mouse mat is one big switch for the mouse when the mouse is on it

From my limited electronics knowledge, i think it would be done with magnets, because the moving the two would create an induced electro-motive force, which is amplified, powering the wirelessness. Probably not though, that seems too simple

Correct! It uses the elctrostatic energy from the USB port to power the mouse itself.
So.. can it double as a tablet?
Unfortunately not, I tryed as soon I as I plugged it in
Does the mouse have to touch the odd pad?
Yes, the mouse has to make contact with the board, but it acts as a normal mouse mat.
It slides along it with ease and is very sleek and takes up hardly any room at all on a desk.
Perhaps there is an embedded rechargeable battery in the mouse and is recharged by a station which is also the FM signal receiver.
The mouse itself is very light, and I have taken the mouse apart to see if there was and there isn't.
The Mouse Mat and the mouse itself completes a connection which allows the power to go to the mouse
Hence the whole mouse mat is one big switch for the mouse when the mouse is on it
Thats the simple way of explaining what I said at the start of this post.
*phew*
That was a very large post. RunT$1takes a deep breath.

indeed the mouse mat its self does not have any sensors in it, it only caries power from your USB 2.0 port to the mouse pad. The Mouse when making contact with it is then powered through ectro magnetics. Moving the mous then causes the pointer to move.
So.. can it double as a tablet?
With this particualr device.. no. But this is also feesable(spelling?) Seeing as you'd need a tablet pen that gets its power and sends information back to the PC in a similar fashon as the mouse does this device could be made in the near future depending on where the manufacture wants to go with the technology.
