I'd actually try and stick with the routine when following the tutorial, but there's no need to save or anything since you did indeed just copy. After doing the tut you can just try it again once you know what you're doing and add your own touch. Just get whatever the tut is trying to teach down for starters. You can add your own touch later, imo. Certainly, do not use any work straight from a tut as if it was your own or anything.
