I've been pondering on making this thread for a long time but zomg, it's here.

Which comedy will do y' go for? I see a 50% on both of them, but if just had to choose one. American. I don't have a huge opinion on English because I haven't seen to much of it. I've seen Benny Hill, and very little of Monty Python.

American comedy can fall sometimes under "stupid humor". Don't know what I mean? Try this or this. And English comedy, I ain't too good on explaining that.

Sure I like some of the American humour and enjoy shows like South Park, Malcolm In The Middle, and That 70s Show. Complete Savages was a recent good one but that only lasted 1 season. However, some American comedies I just find boring.

On the other hand most of my favourite shows are British comedy... Shooting Stars, Harry Enfield, The Young Ones, Father Ted. It's so crazy and funny, it's got cult appeal. I guess I would describe British comedy as "ludicrous humour".

I suppose that's one "good" thing about my degree (aero engineering), there aren't too many terms/words/etc that have "alternative" meanings.
What, like cockpits, turboshafts, thrust, nozzles, corkscrews, ram drag, payload, flaps, and wind tunnels?

I like all kind of comedy.. I have seen a fair share of Monty Python. On the other hand, what you would call, "American Comedy", I would say that some of it is good, and then some of it is just dull, or boring. Alot of it gets old fast as well.

I look at it this way.. If I happen to see something on TV, that I think may be funny, I leave it on. But most of the time it is very, very dull.

What I hate about it here in the U.S. is the censorship policies. Its nuts... FCC can just go uck themselfs

They sensor hole in asshole, anything slightly violent or sexually suggestive... or even just suggestive gets debated on whether or not its good to air or at what time

They can make good comedy sometimes but.. it gets predictable/censored/taken out of air/dull

meh

edit: oh and i havent seen any 'english' comedy HOOO

paramount comedy is one of the more boring channels for most of the day... There's about 20 random american sit-coms with very bad laugh tracks and the most predictable jokes ever.
Meanwhile I believe a lot of british comedy with laughing is actaully done for real - even if it's not, at least it's not overdone.

There is some good american stuff, and you can't really just sum up british comedy in those few programs.. but.. yeh..

I may be an idiot for saying this. But sometimes, the censorship can make things funnier, but only with some words. If someone specifcally says "A-hole" and all you hear is the A (A... Not ass) then it's fucking stupid. But when someone says fuck and you hear just the "F" I just find that too hilarious. But they put good movies on comedy central, and they censor the balls out of it, like Scary Movie 2 and Not Another Teen Movie, they ruined those movies. Why don't they just put those movies on the stash? When they do that to movies like Joe Dirt and Kingpin it's not so bad, but still...

As for the comedy bit, English comedy can go on for so long and still be funny, it travels a long road without dying. As for American, it's a bit harder, and you have to think up fresh stuff all the time. When I watch movies like 40-Year-Old-Virgin I just get blown away by the clever things they added in there. And it's more of American shows that die due to the "unfunniness" all the time. Like... Friends... Or the ever queer blowing "That 80's show!"

Don't forget Ab fab, Vicar of Dibley, One foot in the grave, Open all Hours. There must be loads more of great comedy shows that haven't been mentioned.

Anything English before (I'm talking sitcoms here) Open All Hours is apsolute harilious, anything after (My Hero, My Family and many more) suck so many balls, the only exception is "The IT Crowd", which I thought was funny...
We've also only had one funny sketch show, Goodness Grasious Me, everything since has been apsolute shite (EG: Little Britain, Cathrine Tate, The Fast Show)

America has produced a lot of stellar sitcoms like Becker (currently showing on Five, which is good. I missed it from the Comedy Central) and The Drew Carey Show (which hasn't been shown over here and isin't on DVD :() But it also puts out a lot of crap, filler sitcoms that are ok, but never that great.
As far as I know, America only has one sketch show, Whose Line Is It Anyway? which is consistantly great!

Haha, nice to hear you consider b_e british comedy, Runt and Abd :P

If I had to choose between the two, I'd go with British comedy without a doubt. Indeed, apart from Little Britain and Catherine Tate Show, I can't think of a single comedy I wouldn't mind watching that has come out here. Some of my favourite shows are Black Books, Green Wing, Nevermind the Buzzcocks, Have I Got News For You, classic Mr Bean and Whose Line Is It, which you yanks stole :P

The formulaic american sitcoms that get churned out and shown over here on abc1 and paramount are genernally terrible - but there are a few that push their heads above the cloud, Scrubs and Familty Guy are up there with my favourite comedies ever.

There have been some british comedies that are as appalling as the majority of the american ones - that one with davina McCall in was a good example, cant remember the name now. There's been a lot of good stuff though, and i dont recall ever seeing an american comedy quiz show.

Like zog said - you cant really judge the many by the few, but on the whole i much prefer the british style of humour - the american sitcoms tend to be too obivous with the gags.

What about Home Improvement? Thats generally a funny show to watch. Different material nearly every show.
Which is kinda good I suppose because it keeps me interested, instead of the same thing but in a different way.

In this instance, I'd like to remove 'Little Britian' from my list in the previous post, and replace it with 'Porrige' or 'The Two Ronnies'. :)

Another thing I hate is when a show (usually Amercian) comes out and it runs for so long, so many seasons and such, when the show just obviously isn't funny. It's like there not making jokes, it's like they say things and you hear random unneeded laughter from the audience because something directs them to laugh. Yet the show just lives on. Perfect example, the Chris Rock Show.
