3D sound sample

This is pretty impressive. I find it works best with stereo headphones. You can hear the sound move all around you. Who needs surround sound speakers?

This was one of my brother's thoughts - if you've only got two ears there's no reason you can't have surround sound with two channels...

Yeah but your ears can tell what direction sound is coming from, and if there's only 2 speakers then the sound can only possibly come from those 2 points. Evidently there is some way of tricking your ears so that it sounds like the noise is coming from somewhere else, but I've no idea how it works.


What do you mean it's pretty terrible harry? Do you think it doesn't sound like surround sound? Try it with stereo headphones instead of surround sound speakers - that's the whole point. Obviously surround sound is possible with surround sound speakers, this is to demonstrate that it's possible with only 2. It works best with headphones because they're in the best location - right beside your ears. If you've just got stereo speakers they're probably in front of you so it won't work so well.

I was going to say it's all based on the time it reaches each ear, but then I thought, 'how does that help tell whether it's in front or behind,' so I checked howstuffworks..




so in fact I don't have a clue - just having a channel per ear doesn't seem like enough given that the pinna will reflect sound the same every time with headphones.

Yeah... cunning stuff. It's probably very difficult to do, which would explain why it isn't done yet. Can anyone here read Italian? I've no idea what that site actually says, maybe they've developed this technology and they're selling it or something.

I set my PC into 2 speaker mode and it just sounded like L/R mixing. Plus I think it's pretty ovious that it'll work best with headphones, and it doesn't really matter much to me because I never use headphones nor have decent headphones. I'm quite fine with my 6 speakers .

Yeah, I doubt this is going to become common anytime soon, so I'll just stay envious of you and your surround sound speakers. All the same this is pretty cool to hear... it even goes above and below you.

That only works if you have your eyes closed or if you're in a pitch black room. At one Disney World attraction there was this show (I guess you could call it that) where you had to wear headphones and Drew Carey was doing some crazy spy-guy stuff. He had a camara on him and while he had it out, someone was coming, so he hid it in his mouth. Boom, pitch black and you hear that "3D sound". It's not anything new (that was about 5 years ago), but it really only works best if you can't see.

It works best if you can't see because that way you don't have your eyes telling you that what you can hear isn't really there... same as any kind of surround sound.
