I was always under the impression an RPG's define-ing feature was the whole leveling up and managing a character.
Grand Theft Auto games are role playing of sorts, but are much watered down.
Compared to spending days collecting that fabled equipment, and setting up your characters skills just right.
To jumping on the game to complete mission which involves perhaps buying a few weapons at the store and shooting people. There just isnt the depth associated with a proper RPG.
Like Readme said, it is a close minded thing. But its just of those things people are anal about.
Need for speed underground 2. Has almost the same qualities as GTA ( upgrading your "person" in this case a car. And a large-ish world with associated missions ) but how many would say its an RPG?

Interesting point Jay, but a car doent really play a role (except i suppose driving you around). The character in GTA plays a role, and there's different ways you can play it.

still don't think it's a RPG.
almost EVERY shooter could be considered an RPG by the standards you've set for it, ReadMe. all shooters involve a character which gets stronger as you play and who is involved in the main story of the game. many shooters even allow you to affect the way the game is played to some extent (granted, GTA has the best ability to affect game-play, but that isn't a requirement in an RPG)

Well, every game can be classed as a role playing game because you play as the role of the character. But usally, when you think of an RPG you think of stat charts, "Experience points" and some sort of turn base.. GTA does have have RPG elements, but they are very watered down. In Counter-Stirke(*Shudders*) you earn money to buy guns with, does that make it an RPG? No.

Considering RPG's as 1 character that you play, with loads of games out there it would make the catagory of RPG pretty much... off
RPG's IMO, are games with adventure of a character. finaly fantasaye

Well the point still stands, because he said every game, and original tetris is a game that doesn't involve people

So would you say mario is an RPG? They go on an adventure..oh..but they don't have stats..nvm.
So a definition of an RPG would be an adventure game where you increase in stats.
Edit: Google's definition of an RPG is:
Long games with elaborate storylines that involve going on a quest and building experience that makes the PC stronger (ie, Final Fantasy, Dungeons and Dragons ).

THAT sounds right. granted, MMOs kinda water down the elaborate plot bit (mostly, Guild Wars seems to have a very elaborate and involved plot), but there's still always a decent plot.

Oh this is original tetris! Ever tried playing link up against another gameboy? You either play as mario or luigi when head to head.
Many fun memories of playing against my sister and sending a bunch of blocks over to her side....

Yeah, I always played that tetris game on gameboy.
Good old tetris and their cheap little firework graphics.

Except tetris was not originally a GambeBoy game...

Aaah, so when you said original tetris, you weren't implying I was referring to the countless imitations floating about.
So what did it start off on?
