I'm willing to spend around £120 on a new cpu, preferably intel. Can anyone suggest anything?

Not if you want Intel, but AMD Athlons are good. I think mine is the equivelent of a Pentium 4 or something.

So you're saying a p4 3ghz with hyper-threading tech isn't a good choice at £120?

But you said I couldn't get anything good from an intel processor for £120 in your reply.

I'd say just go for the best you can get at that price. If you ask me, anyone who can tell the difference between the performance of different brands of processors is a bit freaky

I presume you'll be buying a new motherboard too? If not, you'll have to tell us what socket your current MoBo is, so we can fnid you a processor for it

Hmm, its a kinda old socket A board, so if you want an upgrade worth having, you'll need a new mobo and ram too :/

Would an Intel Pentium 4 530 "LGA775 Prescott" 3.0GHz (800FSB) with HT Technology - Retail (CP-057-IN) work with my current mobo?

Nope.
Your board supports SOCKET A processors.
You may know them as AMD ATHLON XP processors.
Thats all that will fit in there.
http://usa.asus.com/mb/socketa/a7v266-e/overview.htm
What processor are you running at the moment? I dont think your going to get 3ghz and a mobo from intel... not for a 120 quid anyway.
Like meia said, ram too...can you tell us what kind of ram is in the machine? Usually theres a sticker on he ram itself.

| Avast, 'tis a fine day to be sure.
i think hes already running an Intel processor, but i know hes just got a lot of RAM from a relative, so i dont think hes gonna be so keen on getting some new stuff :/

The board he posted is a socket A board like meia said. If hes running an intel mobo and processor. I seem to recall him saying something about a p3 long ago...where did the mobo come from?
more of a case of the ram matching the clock of the processor.
For example. PC2100 is not going to be up to the job of a XP 3200+ processor, becuse for that you need some 200mhz ram, which is 3200 iirc.
we need more info!
