You can't really deny the scientific explinations in that passage on animal breeding and buoyancy though, can you?

Well i've been avoiding this thread for the last few days and have sorta skim read the major points just now. Nice to see some stock standard GCSE RE arguements for and against the existance of a god.

One of the better one's that i've not seen is that pretty much all of the major religions have very very common standard principles. This could be for two reasons really:
a) There is a god and this being has shown itself to a few different people in order to get the religions started
b) all the religions were started with the same goal.

I'm an atheist, i refuse to believe in the idea of a supreme being with the power to control everything around us - however I do support the existance of gods (more on this in a min). I believe that religion was designed to control the masses, and it has done a very good job of this. I may be wrong in this belief but blind defence from the religious members here will be just the same as me coming out with a blanket statement such as "there is no god, anyone who thinks otherwise is stupid, go home".

You tell a man that if he steals then he will be locked up for a bit then he might not steal. Tell him that he'll be tortured for eternity and he's gonna be giving it a bit more thought. Fear of God is a powerful weapon.

Anyone notice the decrease in religion in general around the world? also notice the decrease in moral values and respect for authority? I reckon there's a link.

As for the existance of god, i'm supporting this - but not an almighty being that can do whatever he/she/it wants but chooses to observe - i'm talking about an idea, or perhaps an ideal. The thought of god in people's minds is where the real power is.

as for death? I'm gonna go with Descartes. "when i die, i rot"

No wait a week is one quarter of the lunar cycle (the moon) i think.
regardless, its still based on a celestial object that wouldn't exist in the plane of existance a supernatural being like God would live on.......and besides, the bible just said 7 days, not one week.

The programme basicly assumed that the stor was true but had been exagerated over the years. The conclusion that they finished with was that the ark was simply a trading boat, much smaller than what it is said to be in the bible, which shipped animals, food, and beer over a very large lake or estuary. Unfortunatly the traders set off to cross the water at exactly the wrong time. It was the time of year when the glaciers melted, swelling up the huge stretch of water and got them completley lost. They eneded up traveling out to sea, which made them think there was some kind of huge flood.

What the programme was trying to say was there was never a god involved. It managed to explain the situation very well, whithout using any supernatural explanation. I dont know what to believe now.
its highly likely that many of the stories in the bible are merely exaggerated, but as I said earlier, the whole point is just to get you to live a good life, and to treat others well. the truthfulness of the stories is irrelevant in most cases.

besides, not everything in the bible could possibly be true. if I remember correctly, adam and eve were the humans god created, and all other came from them, yet they only had 2 sons....I've most likely missed part of the story somewhere as I've never sat and read the bible, but the point remains, not all the stories in the bible could possibly be true.

They had many sons and many daughters. I don't think there's ever an exact number listed, well, anywhere, but I do know that there were at LEAST three sons. Namely Abel (killed by Cain), Cain, and Seth.

*agrees*
Religion was a way of partially answering the question "What is life for?" and "Why should live?" and it has worked.
To be honest I believe in a god because there isnt anything else to believe in, and if i dont believe in anything then I feel that there isnt anything to live for.

Im not a christian. Im a Quaker, a religion that has branched off christianity. It is so much more flexible and it dosnt even require you to believe in a god. Its more to do with peace with the world. I quite like it and I feel that its a very good religion to be in.

I took a test a whlie back to see which religion I fit into most, and I was told Orthodox Quaker, so I'd have to agree Quaker...ism? is a good religion.

It's just Quaker, there's no ism that can go on the end. Quakers were the people that founded the Pennsylvania colony. The religion even has food products based off it, Quaker Oatmeal (yep, origionally made by a Quaker IIRC). They got their name because they 'quaked in the presence of God.' Evidentally, that old description doesn't hold as true today as it did a few centuries ago...

Well, I checked the history of it, and it wasn't made by Quakers, but it was named for that. And the person on the box is supposed to be a colonial (I think).
