Windows XP service pack 2, it fixes a lot of security holes (and opens many more, surely), enables a crappy ms firewall, and bugs tons of programs. I didn't install it.

This SP2 is a shame, they postponed it hundreds of times, they announced it like the security messiah, and it is so secure& fixy that almost every app/game has problems with it. Blame SP2 !

The SP2 does require some progs to be reinstalled, however, it has good sides aswell. For example, it makes WinXP work faster and occupy less memory for some people. Also, the firewall ain't too bad. It does annoy the hell of me since i have ZoneAlarm Pro, but that doesn't matter...

No. Don't, SP2 is slow ass and doesn't really make a diffrence.

maybe in your experience. The number of problems we've experienced with SP2 so far =~ 1/2. Bit of a USB issue, can't be sure it was SP2 that caused it. Was the same issue with SP1 tho.
Apart from that nothing is going slowly. Everything seems to be working fine. Have you defragmented lately?

The more files you write, delete, and rewrite onto your hard drive, the more likely it is to become fragmented, that is to say, files ar written in a fragmented way, multiple pieces, when system cannot or will not allocate enough contiguous space to store a complete file as a unit, but instead puts parts of it in gaps between other files.
To read a file, if it is fragmented, the hard disk must make lots of moves and it takes more time.
Defragmenting is the operation that writes all the files contiguously. It doesn't make your hard disk speed up, but it will take less hard disk accesses to read files. So it is good. Browsing creates a lot of fragmentation.

I've read thru all the SP2 documentation on the MS site, and the only thing that is incompatible with some software is the new firewall, which can be turned off in three clicks. Apart from that, it *shouldn't* create any problems. Here's some SP2 docs for ya:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?pr=windowsxpsp2it
In short, if you have problems after installing SP2, it's most probably your fault

Thx for docs, and for the firewall stuff, well... *click* *click* *click* , since I already use (a better) one. Anyway, I'll update as soon as it's available in french (translation in progress...), for the security holes stuff.

just to say: that half a prob wasn't even to do with SP2, it was plugging a new webcam that required the full power of a USB port into the 5 port hub on the same day as upgrading to SP2...
