Not neccesarily. In the short term, it certainly is a bad thing, but in the long term, it's a good thing. Medicine improves during wars because it is needed, doctors can try out new methods and learn to think for themselves, which progresses medicine. Which in turn, makes people healthier and saves lives. So, in a way, wars save lives.

I'm not saying that war is great, just trying to make you see the other side of the argument.

I already said that it was bad in the short term...

Plus the nuclear bomb wasn't in ww2, it was at the start of the cold war.

Actually, it's still bad in the long term. The longer a war goes on, the more tension is built up. This tension leads to even more powerful weapons to be developed. Then the destruction leads to anger. Anger leads to hate. Hate leads to the dark side (sorry about the cliche :P). After a war is over, numerous skirmeshes are still being sparked, which can lead to another war.
And medicine doesn't neccessarily improve during a war. War is all about meatball surgery, patch them up quickly and get them back out. Medicine isn't developed more during wars from people sitting back and thinking about it. It's progressed by doctors and nurses at the front having to re-write the rule book to save people's lives on the fly.
