for some reason my system keeps freezing. it only started doing it about 2 weeks ago. at first i thought it might have been the cpu was too hot (which it was.. 68 degrees) so i cleaned the heatsink (60 degrees, yey) but it still kept crashing.
i think it might be a problem with my cable modem, because most of the time when it crashes is when i try to run firefox. the start menu stays there and firefox doesnt come up until you take out the cable modem.. then everything runs fast. the ethernet light on my modem keeps flashing all the time too, even when im not doing anything. the cable modem is the silver NTL one (hisss)
any ideas what to do?

It could be worth testing RAM sticks too. Memtest86 does this (freeware proggie), grab it here.
Once you got your floopy, all you have to do is boot with it, and it will scan your ram for chip errors, which may cause this kind of trouble. I hope it's not this though.

You definately have spyware. I have had this problem before. There are 2 programs that will help you. One of them is called Ad-aware, and the other one is WinCleaner. Email me at joshammo@yahoo.com and I'll send u them and teach u how to use them.

Spybot Search and Destroy is much better than Ad-Aware.

I had Spybot search and destroy before my computer was wiped, and the person who fixed or computer added ad-aware for some reason, and I think it's better than Spybot.

Nope. Ad-Aware doesn't have even a half of the functions Spybot has, and it wasn't updated for a half an year now

Well, I use both ATM, Spybot is a bit slow on my machine, but finds less things than Ad-aware (freeware version, without adwatch). I have regular updates of the definition file of ad-aware (more than weekly), unlike spybot. But concerning the program himself, well, I still wait for an update, hehe.
If you want a program like adwatch with same functions, check spyware blaster, it is freeware, and efficient.
Does spybot or ad-aware scan Firefox's cache ? Since I use it, ad-aware and spybot don't find anything...

Yeah, but firefox is so efficient, and blocks most adware, you get much less adware.

Do any of you watch TV? Maybe things have changed, but back in my day they always recommended using Ad-aware as well as Spybot S&D to clean your system. That's what I've done and I've had no problems since (although you do have to set the programs up to search correctly so they find everything).
Sorry for going off-topic knifa, as I'm sure this probably doesn't help you a bit. Gl and what-not.

Hm, that could be a good idea. Anyone know how big Spybot is? I don't really want to waste a bunch of memory, if it's big.

Spybot "eats" some 12Mb on hard disk, and some 18Mb in Ram when active, which isn't very much. Ad-aware is smaller though.

Too bad they don't give updates for Ad-Aware Pro anymore - my installed version is getting pretty old now(last update was six months ago). That's why i mostly use Spybot, actually...
