um.. it's never been broken... the chances are you've just never had all your posts as read. It goes away for me all the time. If there's a forum you're not interested go to select forums to ignore at the top of the index page. :). The red thing wont appear if there are new posts in that forum only.

The star next to the forums you ignore shouldn't show up when there are new posts either.
