Yep, you need. But if you don't know how to use MySQL and are too lazy to learn, you can use a textfile. If you want to combine it with a user DB, I recommend MySQL.

arent php support other dbs, like ms Accses?

Yes, I wouldn't recommend Access tho. lol.

The db, IMO is PostgreSQL, the later versions anyway. I've never used it, but it's faster, and has more features than the more widely used versions of MySQL.

The only problems are that it's harder to find a Postgres host, and scripts aren't portable to a mysql database, unless you use your own function for every query you make, and don't use anything that isn't cross compatible, which kind of removes the point. Still, postgres is faster, aparrently.
