What your school has is called a transparent proxy. What this means is that your default gateway uses a filter, and converts normal port 80 traffic into proxy port 80 traffic, and redirects it to a normal proxy.

Normally, to prevent trying to parse every damn outbound request, this gateway only runs the filter on ports 80 (and maybe 8080, and maybe a few other "common proxy ports" to catch people trying to use proxy servers).

What you need to do now, is find a proxy server on a non-standard port (such as 3000something) with no restrictions. How? Easy. Search google for "public proxy list" and open up Firefox and plop the IP and port into it's configuration settings. Then, your outbound traffic goes to a proxy on port 3000ish and not through 80. Now, your gateway thinks that your not using HTTP, and doesnt apply it's own filter.

If you determine that your gateway uses the filter on all ports (very unlikely) you now simply need a SOCKS proxy, or a SSL proxy. These are encrypted protocols that the transparent proxy won't be able to touch. If you get this far with no luck, let me know.

PS: "Weighted phrase limit exceeded." means that the proxy downloaded the page, and searched it for inappropriate words, like "fuck" or "games" or whatever. The count of bad words exceeded the limit, and it decided to tell you that instead of showing you the page.

Thanks a lot, I tested it today and it works. My problem now is that it was really slow and even though I can get to miniclip, sparknotes, ect,., I cant really navigate once I get there 'cause every page takes forever... Was I just using a really slow proxy?

Hehe, I just realized that the Firefox folder is only 17MB. This means that I can put it on a new USB disk and use it from there without anyone knowing.

By the way, our filtering as school is just hostname/IP based, so random nph-proxies work pretty well - they blocked www.team17.com .
