you read the question right, it's just an uneducated question.
you need the PS2 Network Adaptor to 'network' the PS2. Whether you use a router or not is your choice, but most run into difficulties when they try. I was using a hub, and then I had it hooked straight into the cable modem, and now I use nothing, because I haven't played PS2 in ages.
er that last part may not make a whole lotta sense. i meant the first time i played ps2 online i had the hub hooked up to the cable modem, and then the computers and ps2 hooked into the hub. another setup was just having the ps2 hooked into the cable modem and then i used the usb port on my cable modem to hook up a computer and then i used internet connection sharing to hook up the two computers to the internet. now i do not play ps2 online.

The ps2 has no rj49 port (i think thats it... been a while since networking class). The Network Adaptor basically adds that port to the system. It also adds the connections for a hard drive.

A router is a device for linking two networks together. i.e. the Internet, to your LAN. It uses Netwrk Address Translation to change the public IP address of the Internet connection to the private IP address of one of the computers on your LAN.
A hub is just and electronic junction box. it takes information in at one port and sends it out to all the others with no consideration as to what the information contains.
Copy and pasted, so don't get these confused. Routers have some kinds of firewalls to PROTECT you from incoming bad packets/data.

this is the one thing i don't like about ps2 is all the crap games. however it has most of the best games, though, so it's just preference.

GAMECUBE THE BEST! LOL ROFL! It's the worst system i've ever played besides the mario games (which are just pretty much all remade old ones) Other than that they're all 3-10 age games.
