A whois search on a domain name lets you find out supplied info about who owns a domain name, you can get it for pretty much all .com .net and .org domains at least - and probably more. There's some sites that offer just a dns lookup service, and alot of domain hosting companies also have them available so you can see if anyone has the domain name you want.
