How on Earth do I get the maps to work properly? The problem: I can't get the stupid background to go away and be ignored so I can place worms INSIDE the map parts that aren't objects!

Make sure that the background is PURE black. That would be hex color #000000, or RGB values of 0, 0, and 0.
